HLC Nursery

Welcome to the HLC Nursery.

We offer a happy, friendly, caring and stimulating environment to all children, this helps to promote your child’s development and reach their full potential before going to school.

At present there are places to take 35 children per session, age ranging from six months to five years. The nursery facilities are designed to cater for college students with young children, enabling them to take advantage of various full or part time courses at the college, with the assurance that their child will be well cared for.

We have two rooms in the nursery:-

Class 1 is divided into two sections we have a carpeted area for our younger children ages ranging from 6 months – 2 years and the other half of the room is designed for children from 2 – 3 years.

Class 2 is our pre-school room aged 3 – 5 years.

All of our staff are DBS checked before working with the children and either experienced, fully qualified or working towards a childcare qualification.

The nursery is open term time and we also offer a very successful play-scheme during holidays, subject to numbers. Booking forms are issued in advance as spaces are limited. See details of Fees & Terms

Admissions & Settling In

Nursery places are offered at the start of each new year (September), they will firstly be offered to existing parents, then students get priority, staff are then offered places and if any places are left then to the general public.

Places are also offered all year round subject to availability; however your details can go onto our waiting list if enquiring in advance.

We offer settling in sessions for your child, consisting of 2 hours each. This enables you and your child to meet the staff and other children and see what goes on in the rooms and activities they may do. We also sit and discuss your child’s routine  and specific needs with you.

The staff will always make it clear to parents, from the outset, that they will be supported in nursery for as long as it takes your child to settle in. Parents will be re-assured if their child seems to take a long time to settle in and staff will always listen to and respect parent’s wishes.

Parent Agreement Form

All parents will be given a parent agreement form to fill in. This will have all of your child’s contact details, medical details and all relevant information the nursery needs to know to help look after your child to the highest possible standard. These forms are confidential and are only accessible to nursery staff.

Please ensure contact details are kept up to date at all times.

Clothing & Personal Possessions

Please ensure all of your child’s personal belongings are clearly labelled as all articles left at nursery are at owner’s risk.

Parents are to provide disposable nappies for their child if needed and any changing requisites necessary. Each child should have at least one spare set of clothing available.

We do not mind if your child brings a comforter into nursery with them however can you please limit the toys brought in as they can get mixed up with nursery toys or even lost.

Meals/Lunch Boxes

Parents can either bring in a packed lunch for their child each day they are in nursery or have a hot lunch provided, for a separate cost per day. For hot lunches please see menus on notice board or ask a member of staff for details.

If providing a lunch for your child, it is suggested that they have a healthy contents. Please ensure they do not have any fizzy drinks, chewing gum or any nuts or nut related products.

Collection of your Child

Please let staff know in advance if anyone other than yourself is coming to collect your child. We do ask for details on your parent agreement form of other people authorised to collect your child and also a password. This is to maintain high security and safety of your child.

Medication

Any medication can only be administered after written consent and instructions from the parent. Please ensure you hand all medication to staff so that it can be stored away safely in either the first aid box or fridge as required. Never leave it in your child’s bag.

If a child has been prescribed any antibiotics you will be asked not to bring your child into nursery until they have been taking them for at least 48 hours.

Please note: We can only give prescribed medication with a clear label on stating your child’s name and dosage.

The nursery cannot undertake the care of a sick child.

If your child does appear to be ill whilst at nursery we will call you to make you aware of the situation and to collect your child.

If your child has any illness that is contagious ie conjunctivitis, stomach bug, etc. we will ask you to keep them away from nursery for 48 hours after the symptoms have cleared up.

Early Years Foundation Stage

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at HLC Nursery and ensure that we follow the quality common principles and commitments to deliver quality education and childcare experiences for all children.

Whilst your child is at HLC Nursery they will be given a key person, which will be a member of staff based in your child’s room.

Your child’s key person will do regular observations on your child which will link into the seven areas of learning.

  1. Personal, social and emotional development
  2. Communication and language
  3. Physical development
  4. Literacy
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the world
  7. Expressive arts and design

Room Planning

In each room there is a planning sheet to show weekly activities that have been completed to link in with each child’s learning and development. Some activities will be individual and some are grouped but all outcomes are based on all children’s individual learning.

The activities are colour co-ordinated to show green as an activity based upon your child’s interest and blue that is adult led to ensure that all areas of learning are covered.

Each half term all parents will be sent out a feedback sheet, this is so we can have constant communication with you on what your child has been doing at home. Such as any new interests, toys, visits or holidays they have been on and so on.

This helps us to include a wide variety of planning for your child as we are aware that they may do different things at home than they do at nursery and vice versa.

All planning is always based upon the children as individuals and what we learn about their interests and feedback that is given from parents. So parent communication is a very important part of your child’s learning and development.

Progress Reports

At the end of each term (spring – March, Summer – July, Autumn – December) there will be a progress report completed on your child’s development, titled “A Unique Child” that will be sent home (there is also a copy put into their learning journal).

This is so you can see what age stage your child is at in all seven areas of learning and how we are supporting them. We will ensure you are happy with our support and also check to see if there is anything further you would like us to work on with your child.

You can request to look at your child’s learning journal at any time and this is always sent home for you to keep when your child leaves nursery.

At all times children are able to participate in any activity and learning situation, it is their choice.  Encouragement and guidance is always given to broaden their horizons, enabling self-confidence and awareness to develop.  We appreciate the large step and adjustment a child has to make upon entering school life and we do our very best to prepare your child for this by linking up with the schools beforehand and inviting the teachers into nursery to discuss your child’s development.

Should you wish to discuss any aspects of the above, please contact The Nursery Manager.
