Staff Member Excels as Student!
Staff and students from the Creative Techniques course at Herefordshire and Ludlow College are celebrating the fantastic achievements of staff member turned student, Sandra Hughes. Sandra has been awarded the City & Guilds Gold Medal of Excellence for Interiors, the only gold medal for interiors in the country and one of only 70 awarded worldwide. The award is also a great achievement for the College who have now been awarded their 5th gold medal from City & Guilds.
Sandra was working with Creative Techniques students as a Learning Support Assistant, when she suddenly realised that she would really like to try this for herself. She enrolled on the course at Level 2 and soon discovered that not only did she have the passion for her craft but also some flair and a rapidly developing skill set. She then progressed to Level 3 and continued to develop under the guidance of her tutor, Marina Matthews, who could see the potential and quietly encouraged and pushed her. Sandra is quick to acknowledge the contribution of her tutor and feels that it was Marina’s advice to ‘go for the wow factor!’ when putting together her portfolio that helped her achieve the award. Sandra commented, “Marina has been absolutely brilliant and I would thoroughly recommend the course to anyone.” Marina was also fulsome in her praise for Sandra stating that “she is a joy to teach and her work is sheer perfection.”
Sandra also acknowledged how much the course had helped her through particularly challenging times this year, after being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer and then suffering a family bereavement. “The course has very much helped me at a personal level and boosted my confidence when I was at a low ebb. I feel pride when I look back at what I’ve achieved and how far I’ve come”.
Sandra will now travel to London on the 15th June to be presented with her award at a prestigious award ceremony at the Roof Top Garden in Kensington.
