William Powell & Sons (Builders) Ltd
William Powell & Sons (Builders) Ltd won the Employer of the Year 2019 at the annual Herefordshire & Ludlow College Apprenticeship Awards Evening. Managing Director, Paul Quarrell has been working for William Powell & Sons (Builders) Ltd for 30 years. The long-standing company began life in 1895 and has been taking on apprentices for many years. Paul started out as an apprentice in construction at Herefordshire & Ludlow College, when it was previously known as the Hereford College of Technology.
“Having previously studied at the College and worked my way up within the company, both the apprenticeship scheme we run and the College are close to my heart.
We usually take on about four apprentices throughout the year, depending on workload. We have a diverse range working with us as we take on mature students as well as students straight from school. Some people have started an apprenticeship with us looking for a change in career direction, such as a previous tank driver in the army who went on to study for a bricklaying apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships are a great way to mould people and our apprentices generally stay with the company, which keeps skills and knowledge within the business. As a testament to this, one colleague has recently completed 40 years of service, some are on 30 years and others 15 years. The retention of employees is excellent within the company, which is why we feel it is so beneficial to take on apprentices.”
