Jonna Munday

“Forestry has always been a huge part of my family life and I wanted to continue this, as my parents work in both logging and basket weaving. I am local to the area and wanted to go straight from school into an apprenticeship at the College, to get stuck straight into work. I didn’t enjoy school very much and prefer the flexibility of learning on the job, rather than sitting in a classroom environment.

I went to the Open Event at the Holme Lacy Campus and decided that forestry was the route that I wanted to pursue. The tutors at the College are always supportive and I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who wants to learn a skill on the job.

My apprenticeship is based at Birchwood Forestry in Sollers Hope, not too far from the Holme Lacy Campus. I enjoy running the kiln and being in the woods, it’s great to be out in the countryside all day. I find the working days enjoyable and I have already learnt so much in the position. My plans are to continue in the forestry industry and potentially set up my own business in the future.”
