Juliusz moved here on his own from Poland three years ago when he was 19 years old. Seeing it as a great opportunity, he studied Level 2 and 3 Computing and IT, achieving three D* in his Level 3 Extended Diploma, the highest grades possible. This year he is going to study a BSc in Computer Science at Kings College in London.
“Since I was 12 years old, I have known that I wanted to go to university and study computer science. I chose a vocational course rather than A Levels so I could just focus on computing.
I took a job as a care assistant to support myself whilst I was studying. It is a nice job and it gives you a sense that you are doing something good. When I started I was the youngest one there!
When I arrived my language wasn’t very good but I knew my computing skills were very strong. I used my directed study time and extra support for my language development. The course helped a great deal with both my confidence and language ability. It was perfect really, if I asked for more help to understand then the tutor would give me an extra explanation that would overcome the language barrier.
When I applied for university there was plenty of support available for completing my UCAS application and developing my personal statement. I highlighted my interests in programming and mobile devices. During the Level 3 course I had the chance to try programming languages such as python and visual basic. I learnt the basic languages and then built my first application.
I knew that I wanted to study in London. It is one of the best cities in the world and has great opportunities for employment and work placements. After my degree I am planning to do a Master’s Degree in Computer Science. I have always dreamt of getting a PhD, I don’t think I will feel fulfilled just getting a degree.”
