Level 3 Technical Diploma in Horse management

“I’m currently working on a boutique stud farm in Australia. We work with both foals and yearlings. It’s hard work but I couldn’t think of a better job opportunity. I work with five others including the owner and we do all types of jobs as you can imagine - from mucking out to injecting the mares, foals and yearlings.

At the beginning of the job I did a lot of work with the mares and foals. I learnt a lot with the vet and vet nurse when scanning the mares or handling the foals. We had a mare who died of colic and she had a foal so we got a foster mare in. Watching the bonding process was amazing.

Prepping the yearlings has been fun so far! They’re crazy! We lunge, hand walk, pull manes, parade and do lots of grooming. It all takes a while but it is very rewarding.

I definitely would not have considered working on a stud farm if it wasn’t for the stud module I studied at college. I didn’t expect to come out here and get a job on a stud farm. I am moving to another job in March. I’m off to do weanling prep which is very exciting.”
