Sam Henton

Sam Henton studied Public Services Level 3 and developed an interest in joining the Navy after attending a careers day at Herefordshire and Ludlow College. The Naval recruitment team provided Sam with an understanding of the wide variety of opportunities available to a Public Services student.

Sam moved into the Naval Intelligence and spent one year aboard ships, followed by seven months in the Middle East. Sam’s subsequent post was aboard the HMS Defender travelling around the world, where he visited fourteen different countries within seven months, followed by one month on a nuclear submarine. Sam is now applying to become a Police Officer, with ambitions to look after people in custody, upholding human rights.

“I didn’t find academia engaging enough for me, whereas the Public Services course suited my learning style, mixing studying with doing. Guest speakers provided a hands-on learning approach which I really enjoyed.

Students who study the course tend to go into a public services role, which really sets you up for a career in the industry. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to achieve what I have, if it wasn’t for the Public Services course.”
