CJ Pilcher-Morris, Level 2 Animal Care Apprenticeship now employed at K9 Cares Ltd
“Growing up I was always interested in animals and knew that I wanted to have a career working with them. When I finished school I knew I wanted to get straight into animal care rather than studying A Levels, so I started the Level 2 Animal Care qualification full-time at the Holme Lacy Campus. Following a work placement at K9 Cares, I knew that long-term I wanted to get into dog grooming as a career, and pursued the Level 2 Animal Care Apprenticeship.
I really enjoyed the apprenticeship, as I gained a lot of work-based experience, with just one day a month in college and the rest in work. It meant that I was able to be much more hands-on in what I was doing, putting all of the theoretical thinking that I had learnt into practice. I was also able to learn from my colleagues, as well as the college. My job now is great as I get to spend all day with the dogs, helping to bath and clip the dogs that are in for grooming, as well as looking after their wellbeing in the daycare areas.
I’d recommend doing both the full-time and the apprenticeship courses as the full-time gives you a lot of knowledge and theory, which you can then use in practice during employment or an apprenticeship. For me now, I’d like to learn more about dog grooming, and maybe one day I can open up my own dog
