Cath Griffiths

“I started my course at the age of 51. I did initially look to study the Foundation Degree in Mental Health at another college which would have been nearer my home, but when I looked deeper into studying at Herefordshire & Ludlow College, I realised the standards of teaching at Hereford were much higher.

I thought initially that being a much older student would have put me at a disadvantage, but I was always made to feel so welcome from both the staff at the College and the pupils in my groups.  Everyone is so welcoming and helpful throughout the College.

I have never regretted my decision to travel the extra miles, as the teaching at Hereford is high class. The tutors teach using their years of experience in Health & Social Care and Mental Health. I have always said that what my tutor doesn't know, isn't worth knowing.

The modules are interesting and varied. I have learnt a lot from my 2 years at the College. For each module a student is given a lot of information that can be found on the Virtual Learning Environment and also pupils are encouraged to research information for each of the modules.  A good timeline is given between a module being launched and the submission date for the assignment.  I have worked in mental health for a few years but after studying this course I feel that I am now more educated and confident about the subject of mental health, which allows me to provide a much better service to the client.

The College encourages guest speakers which are very interesting and also students are encouraged to discuss their experiences in industry (obeying confidentiality) within lectures, which provides a good all-round experience of being taught a particular topic.

Dedication and time management are needed for this course, but the hard work will be well worth the efforts invested to complete this course.

I would highly recommend this course to any student thinking of studying the Foundation Degree in Mental Health in the future, no matter what your age.”
