Bricklaying - Level 2

Course Overview
Practical training takes place in the College’s purpose-built, specialist workshop which is designed to give you the best environment for perfecting the skills to become a competent bricklayer. Theory work is taught in well-equipped classrooms and IT pods, underpinning your existing knowledge with more in-depth subjects such as the interpretation of working drawings, estimating, and setting out buildings. The course content is developed to mirror the industry’s work requirements, giving successful candidates an excellent opportunity for gaining employment in the construction sector. The emphasis on self-motivation and problem solving will further advance your skills to make sure you are ready for employment during and after this course.
Qualification: City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
Duration: One Year
Course Content
You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course. A selection of unit titles is shown below.
- Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
- Principles of Building Construction
- Building Solid Walling, Isolated and Attached Piers
- Interpret Working Drawings
- Build Cavity Walling Forming Masonry Structures
Assessment
Achievement is evaluated by passing practical and theory units, multiple-choice online and paper-based knowledge assessments and practical assessments. All full-time students will be required to study maths and English at the appropriate level.
Maths and English
All students following a full-time programme of study at HLC will study English and maths as part of their studies, please refer to the Study Programmes page of this website.
Entry Requirements
Please Note: Applicants without suitable practical experience will normally be advised to commence study at Level 1.
- Successful and satisfactory completion of a suitable and relevant Level 1 qualification (e.g. Level 1 Diplomain Bricklaying).
- Alternatively, applicants who can evidence suitable experience or aptitude will also be considered
- Successful interview, and initial assessment and a good school reference
- You will need to demonstrate an enthusiasm for this subject area
Progression
Progression routes are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.
Study options may include:
- Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying (part-time)
- Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship in Bricklaying
- Level 2 Diploma / Apprenticeship in Maintenance Operations
Employment options may include:
- Bricklayer/General Builder
- Landscape Gardening
- Stone Layer
- Site Operative (Labourer)

Aged 16 - 18 years: There are no tuition or exam fees
Aged 19 years or over: Tuition Fee £995 | Registration/Exam Fee £150
Additional Course Costs: £225
Personal Equipment: You may also be expected to buy your own personal equipment such as personal protective clothing, stationary and data storage devices.

Apprenticeships

Course Content
You will gain practical skills, knowledge and understanding relevant to your chosen apprenticeship and job role in the workplace, including:
- Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
- Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication
- Carrying Out Blocklaying/ Bricklaying / Cavity Walling Activities
- Setting Out and Building Basic Masonry Structures
- Building Cavity and Solid Walling, Isolated and Attached Piers
Duration and Attendance
You will spend most of your time in the workplace, employed as an apprentice, and you will be released by your employer to attend college for training for two days a week in year one and one day a week in year 2. It will take around 2 years to complete the Level 2 Apprenticeship and a further 12−18 months to complete the Level 3 Apprenticeship.
