Hairdressing - Level 3

Perfecting your own creative direction with dynamic cutting, colouring and hair extensions.
Course Overview
You will have the opportunity to develop and update your technical skills in advanced colouring, colour correction, hair extension, advanced cutting and long hair. Whilst benefiting from the extra enrichment of industry workshops, guest speakers and industry trips, you will also be involved with local and national competitions, giving you the opportunity to explore and create the latest in avant-garde and contemporary styling.
Designed as a practical course based in our commercial salon, your learning will be underpinned by essential theoretical learning and an insight into the financial responsibility of running a business. This is an intensive course, which places high demands on the individual with regard to the level of self-motivation, dedication and enthusiasm required. You must be willing to undertake a significant amount of self-directed study to reach your full potential.
Qualification: Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing
Duration: One year
Course Content
This programme is intended for those who are already qualified to the standard of Level 2. At Level 3 you may choose modules to meet your own particular aspirations. A selection of unit titles is shown below:
- Creatively Cut Hair (using a combination of techniques)
- Colour Hair (using a variety of techniques)
- Creatively Style and Dress Hair
- Provide Creative Hair Extension Services
Assessment
You will be assessed on a continuous basis within a realistic working environment. You will also be required to produce a portfolio of evidence and you will also be assessed through assignments and internal and external test papers. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level.
Maths and English
All students following a full-time programme of study at HLC will study English and maths as part of their studies, please refer to the Study Programmes page of this website.
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above (to include maths and English) or successful completion of a suitable and relevant Level 2 qualification at Merit grade or above
- Successful interview and initial assessment in literacy and numeracy Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area

Progression routes shown below are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.

Course Costs
Students aged 16 to 18: There are no tuition or examination fees.
Students aged 19 to 23: Who are studying for their first full Level 3 qualification will be not be charged any tuition fees, but will be charged the materials fee only.
Students aged 19 to 23: Who already hold a full Level 3 qualification and all students who are 24 or over will be liable for the full cost of the course, based on the current student loan applicable for the qualification. Please contact our Finance department to be advised of the fee / loan due.

Personal Equipment: You may also be expected to buy your own equipment costing approximately £300

Course Content
Whilst there is some overlap in modules for the subjects of Hairdressing and Barbering both have specialist units, the full list of which can be found on our website. A small selection is shown below. You will gain practical skills along with knowledge and understanding in each of your unit titles.

Barbering
- Cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
- Cut facial hair into shape
- Prepare for shaving services
Duration and Attendance
You will spend one day a week at college and four days in the workplace employed as an apprentice. You will be expected to attend functional skills classes unless you already have prior achievement. Duration is up to 24 months for Level 2 and 18 months for Level 3.
