Course Details

A practical study of contemporary business for progression to university and careers in business management, marketing, international business, HR, accountancy, retail, law or finance.

Course Overview

This qualification prepares students for employment in many different business sectors. You may also decide to specialise in certain areas through professional qualifications or progress onto a degree programme.

There are fantastic practical experiences where you will start to research and develop your own business idea and marketing campaign; plus you'll showcase your work at a real-life business event. You will also learn the skills of how to be a successful manager in business, the underpinning accountancy and financial knowledge taught by our industry experienced tutors. You will have the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience in a local business too.

Qualification:

BTEC National Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Business (Equivalent to 1.5 A Levels) – Year 1
BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business ((Equivalent to 3 A Levels) – Year 2

Assessment

Assessment is continuous through assignments, projects, case studies and presentations. Each year will also include two external examinations.

Maths and English

All students following a full-time programme of study at HLC will study English and maths as part of their studies, please refer to the Study Programmes page of this website.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above to include maths and English, or successful completion of a suitable and relevant Level 2 qualification at Merit grade, together with GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (grade C) or above
Successful interview and initial assessment in literacy and numeracy
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area

Progression routes shown below are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.

Course Costs

Please note, the costs given below are subject to change.

Students aged 16 to 18: There are no tuition or examination fees.

Students aged 19 to 23: Who are studying for their first full Level 3 qualification will be not be charged any tuition fees, but will be charged the materials fee only.

Students aged 19 to 23: Who already hold a full Level 3 qualification and all students who are 24 or over will be liable for the full cost of the course, based on the current student loan applicable for the qualification. Please contact our Finance department to be advised of the fee / loan due.

Course Content

As an employed apprentice you will gain practical skills along with knowledge and understanding relevant to your chosen course. The apprenticeship courses will cover mandatory units, which are mostly covered by completing qualifications and a portfolio. Please note that the units will be assessed via exams for the apprenticeships in accountancy.

Duration and Attendance

You will spend most of your time in the workplace employed as an apprentice. You will be expected to attend one day a week for the knowledge section of the apprenticeships and additional functional skills classes unless you already have prior accreditation. Duration 15-24 months depending on the level you study. At the end of the apprenticeship there will be an end point assessment which will need to be passed to complete the qualification. This may be in the form of a portfolio, completion of the relevant qualification and interview.

BUSINESS TRIPS, WIDER LEARNING & PROGRESSION

Throughout the year business students may undertake a range of enrichment activities to complement their programmes of study. This is just a selection of past experiences of the business students.

London

As part of students’ International Business unit, they visited London to draw links to their learning, including viewing some of the Brexit parades and exploring the range of international retailers in Covent Garden and Oxford Street. Students viewed a court case in the Supreme Court and learned about the history and workings at the Royal Courts of Justice.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR)

Students had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of JLR’s stunning state-of-the-art production facility in Solihull. They saw first-hand the production of vehicles using robots, and learning how logistically sleek their business is, utilising Just-in-Time and Kaizen methodologies. The group also received information about work experience placements and advanced apprenticeship programmes.

Oaker Wood Leisure

Effective team working is a key skill of any successful business. Therefore, students start the year with a focus on developing this skill. It’s great to see everyone getting stuck-in and working across their business teams to help support each other and tackle every obstacle thrown at them!

Cadbury

A fun and exciting chance for students to examine marketing at Cadbury and also the different careers in the sector, besides enjoying the opportunity to test the chocolate for themselves!

Chase Distillery

This is a great place to view the production of one of the best vodka’s in the world, all from the humble potato. Students were inspired to hear the story of how the family developed the Tyrrell’s business and sold this to start producing Chase Vodka.

Events Management and Entrepreneurship

Students had the opportunity to develop their own business ideas and marketing strategies and showcase their work to College Governors as part of a Dragons Den business investment pitch and a Showcase Event to external guests. Business ideas included a Beauty Bus and local gym. We certainly had some budding entrepreneurs in the group.

Progression

Nearly 70% of students applied for university with all receiving their first choice offers, including Exeter, Reading, Liverpool, Oxford Brookes, Loughborough, Manchester and other more local universities to study Business, Law and Accountancy related degrees. Other students have secured apprenticeships, including graduate apprenticeships and places on management training schemes and full-time employment.

Canwood Gallery

Examining the difference between a typical ‘limited’ company and a charity. At this local charity art gallery we explored how to set up and sustain a local business.

Local Retailing

Trips to the Beefy Boys and FIT in Hereford, helped students understand the impact of successful leadership and customer service within profitable businesses.

Fundraising Events

Students were challenged to work independently in turning a profit out of an investment of £10 by preparing fundraising events like raffles and silent auctions. These small activities prepared students for their larger event of a charity football tournament in the summer! .
