Plumbing & Domestic Heating (Environmental pathway) Apprenticeship

Introduction to the trade:
The Plumbing and Domestic Heating apprenticeship is part of the City & Guild apprenticeship offer in Building Services. Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. If you are looking for a flexible, rewarding and financially secure career, plumbing could be for you.
Utilising our new renewable centre, the environmental pathway gives learners access to a range of green technologies such as air source heating, solar thermal systems, ground source heating, underfloor heating, rainwater harvesting, etc. within a rapidly growing industry sector.
Some of the duties/requirements of a plumber and domestic heating technician include:
- The installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems.
- Interpreting engineering and building drawings for system installation/upgrades
- Inspecting and testing plumbing and heating installations
- Diagnosing and rectifying faults on a range of plumbing systems and equipment
- Preparing written reports
The College, in the first instance, will assist you in finding employment with a suitable local employer. You will receive comprehensive training both at work and at college, following a training programme that is tailored to you and your employer?s needs.
What qualifications will I gain?
You will achieve the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating; you will also have access to Functional Skills (English and maths) if required.
How will I be trained?
Apprenticeships are designed with the help of the employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes you through the skills you need to do a job well. There are targets and checks to make sure that your employer is supporting you and you are making progress.
The majority of your training will take place whilst with your employer, a typical apprenticeship in comparable sectors would see a learner working 30hrs per week on site and attending college for 1 day (potentially more depending on GCSE results).
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will take place through practical training at college and work and via theory through a portfolio of evidence. Work-based assessments are also carried out.
What are the entry requirements?
Advanced Apprenticeship
- A relevant Level 2 vocational qualification (e.g. City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing).
- You would also normally be expected to have 5x GCSEs at grade C (4) or above including maths and English.
- Those applicants without formal qualifications but who can evidence substantial and relevant sector work experience will also be considered.
- All applicants are offered a place subject to satisfactory interview and an initial assessment in Maths and English.
