Sport – Fitness and Personal Training - Level 3
A new and exciting course that provides students with the experience and qualifications to work in the fitness and leisure industry as Personal Trainers (accepted and supported by the Register of Exercise Professionals – REPs and the Chartered Institute of Management for Sport and Physical Activity - CIMSPA).
Course Overview
This course has been designed for students who aspire to work in the fitness industry and through practical application students will gain industry recognised qualifications and the skill set required to be successful.
The two-year qualification will provide students with the technical skills needed when working with clients in a gym environment, carrying out gym inductions and leading small-group-based exercise supported by underpinning knowledge of the body and specific populations.
Students will gain the confidence and knowledge to work with individual clients to develop training sessions and programmes that meet clients’ individual needs and help them to achieve their training or health goals.
In addition to the practical elements of the course, students will develop an understanding of nutrition for physical performance, and business & technology in personal training. This will support learners in giving nutritional advice and guidance to clients as well as preparing students to set up and manage their own personal training business, which is a popular employment route for many professionals working as personal trainers.

Course Content

- Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing
- Professional Development in the Sports Industry
- Self-employment in the Sport Industry
- Instructing Gym based Exercise
- Exercise and Circuit Based Physical Activity
- Instructing exercise to music
- Instructing water-based exercise
Assessment takes place using a variety of methods; essays, presentations, teaching assessments, practical performance assessments, external assessment, projects, group work, practical work experience and independent research. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level.
Maths and English
All students following a full-time programme of study at HLC will study English and maths as part of their studies, please refer to the Study Programmes page of this website.
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above (to include maths and English) or successful completion of a suitable and relevant Level 2 qualification to Merit grade
- Successful interview and initial assessment in English and mathematics
- Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area
Progression
Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.
REPS have confirmed that on successful completion of the qualification direct entry will be permitted for learners to go into the industry in roles such as:
- Fitness instructor
- Gym instructor
- Personal Trainer
REPs is an independent, public register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health-enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. REPs provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed National Occupational Standards. Members of REPs are protected with specialist insurance that includes public liability and personal accident cover, which supports self-employment activities. Learners are able to continue to develop their careers through industry-endorsed Continuing Professional Development programmes.

Course Costs
Students aged 16 to 18: There are no tuition or examination fees.
Students aged 19 to 23: Who are studying for their first full Level 3 qualification will be not be charged any tuition fees, but will be charged the materials fee only.
Students aged 19 to 23: Who already hold a full Level 3 qualification and all students who are 24 or over will be liable for the full cost of the course, based on the current student loan applicable for the qualification. Please contact our Finance department to be advised of the fee / loan due.
