Introduction to Creative Free Motion Embroidery
Tutor: Rachel Wyatt-Cox
Start Date: 3rd May - 28th June 2022
Time: 6.45pm - 8.45pm
Fee: £60 plus £10 for additional materials
Free motion embroidery is a very creative method of using your sewing machine - enabling it to ‘draw’ with thread. It’s a highly addictive technique that once you start, you will struggle to stop! During this course, you will learn all about how to set up the machine and choose suitable fabrics and threads ready for you to create your masterpieces!
Our theme over the course will be ‘Flowers and Writing’. We will explore how to create drawings of flowers with thread and appliqué using scraps of fabric and other materials, such as book pages. We will practice our stitched writing to finally incorporate this into a final piece of artwork that is totally unique
By the end of the course, you will have several pieces of artwork to take home with you, including 3D flowers and a unique piece of artwork that encompasses the learning that we have done over the previous weeks. This will be a fun, relaxed class where we learn and explore together.
By the end of the course, you can expect to be able to do the following:
- Basic free motion embroidery skills and techniques.
- Appliqué using different fabrics and materials
- Write in stitches
- Create 3D fabric flowers
- Create your very own individual piece of textile art using all the techniques that you have learnt on the course
You will need: This list is to be confirmed, but will include scissors, threads in a variety of colours including black (which is essential), fabrics for flowers and for your end of course project.
The tutor will supply: Initial fabric, fabric stabiliser, scrap fabrics, erasable pens, willow for flowers. Sewing machines and glue guns will be supplied by the college.
About the tutor: “I am a textile artist specialising in using recycled fabrics within my work. I love to create ‘memory art’ for people using special items of clothing within bespoke pictures. I have had my work exhibited in several galleries and enjoy sharing my passion for free-motion embroidery.
What's next? The tutor intends to run an intermediate course in the future, where students will produce a ‘memory art’ picture.
