City & Guilds Technical Qualifications - Important Update

City & Guilds - cancellation of summer assessments due to COVID-19

We are writing to you as the Awarding Organisation for your Technical Qualification to give you an update on the process we will be undertaking with your school or college this summer to ensure that you receive your result from City & Guilds for your qualification. We understand that these past few weeks may have been very unsettling for you, with the announcement that schools and colleges were to be closed, and that assessments for this summer were cancelled. We are working to support your teachers/tutors to make sure that you are treated as fairly as possible and can progress onto the next stage of your education or into work.

How will your grade be calculated?

For every assessment that you have been unable to take this spring/summer (this could be the synoptic assignment, theory exam or other assessments), your school or college will be required to submit the grade to City & Guilds that they believe you were most likely to achieve if teaching, learning and assessment had continued under normal circumstances. This will be based upon what they know about you, along with your work and achievements on your course so far.

In order to predict your grade, teachers/tutors have been be asked to take into consideration a range of activities such as practice tests or mock exams, partially or fully completed assignments, your performance in practical work/tasks, homework or other set work as well as general progress on your course. Your grade will be approved by the Head Teacher or Principal of your school or college, before it is submitted to City & Guilds.

City & Guilds will check all predicted centre assessment grades against the standard across all other schools and colleges offering the same Technical Qualification. This is to make sure everyone is treated as fairly as possible.

Can I see the grades my school or college submits for me?

Please don’t ask your teachers/tutors, or anyone else at your school or college, to tell you the grades they will be submitting to City & Guilds. This information is confidential until results day and your school or college has been advised not to share any grades with you in advance.

When will I get my results?

City & Guilds will release the results to your school/college on the planned dates for this year:

Level 3 Technical Qualification results day is on 3 August 2020
Level 2 Technical Certificate/Technical Award results day is on 20 August 2020

Please be reassured that the grades you get this summer will have equal status with universities, colleges and employers and your certificates will look the same as in any other year and will help you move forward in your lives as planned. Your teachers/tutors are the ones who know you the best, and are best placed to make an accurate, professional judgement about your level of achievement.

Once again, we appreciate how difficult this unprecedented situation is for you, so please be reassured that we are working closely with your school or college to ensure that your grades are a fair reflection of your abilities and performance.

If you have any questions, please contact your school or college directly.

With best wishes,

David Phillips
Managing Director, City & Guilds
